Modest Mussorgsky never planned to orchestrate his Pictures at an Exhibition piano music, yet it clearly called for the vivid colors of a full orchestra, inspired by the work of architect and artist Victor Hartman. Maurice Ravel obliged. Sergei Prokofiev’s rollicking Violin Concerto No. 2 unleashes the stunning virtuosity of soloist Augustin Hadelich. The concert opens with Lera Auerbach’s Icarus, which reaches the heights of drama, much like the namesake figure from Greek mythology, whose desire to fly took him too close to the sun. Vladimir Kulenovic conducts.
